Keep moving, keep active, keep young

Megan McLaren, age 63 – Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis Master Trainer

Physical activity and exercise can help you stay healthy, energetic and keep you feeling younger. There's strong evidence that people who are active have a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, some cancers, depression and even dementia.

"As people get older and their bodies decline in function, physical activity helps to slow that decline," says Dr Nick Cavill, a health-promotion consultant. "It's important they remain active or even increase their activity as they get older."

What is physical activity?

Physical activity is anything that gets your body moving, from walking and gardening to recreational sport. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week, that's 30 minutes on at least 5 days a week.

Megan McLaren is over 60 years old and a Master Trainer of the Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis Methods. She believes anti-aging starts on the inside.

"People are spending a fortune on anti-aging, yet they are neglecting the inner body," says Megan.

Megan explains that the Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis Methods are anti-aging because they start from the inside. These exercise methods keep your organs, your mind, your mobility and all of the things money can't buy, healthy.

As well as Gyrotonic exercise, you could start to include moderate-intensity aerobic activities in your daily routine such as: walking fast, water aerobics, riding a bike, playing tennis or even pushing a lawn mower. As well as regular physical activity, it's important to reduce the amount of time you spend sitting down during the day, so try to avoid long periods of TV viewing, computer use, or driving.

"The biggest benefits come to those who start from scratch," says Dr Cavill. "It's moving from a sedentary lifestyle to a moderately active one that makes the biggest difference to your health. The more you do, the greater the health benefits."
